Twelve

By the grace of the goddess herself, Lucius and the Shadow Army were delayed a day in their travels. This meant that Luna had an extra day to be able to uncover her memories and fully get her magic back. She was so close she could practically taste it - Luna found that she was able to hold her magic for longer periods of time now and had even started to integrate it into her combat training, much to Alistair’s delight.

“Damn Luna, yer puttin’ up one hell of a fight now girl!” Alistair said to her happily.

“Be careful. You’ve been at it all morning.” Jay said to the two of them from the side. He noticed that Luna was dragging lately - she had been training all day, every day, since Ellis had told the group about Lucius being on the move. Her training sessions with Lady Seraphina and the goddess were intense and she barely slept anymore because of how much was on her mind.

“Jay’s right, Luna,” Alistair agreed, a tinge of concern softening his gruff voice. “Ye need to rest. Remember: strength ain’t just about the muscles and magic. It’s bout the mind too.”

Luna shot him an irritated glance, wiping a sheen of sweat from her brow. How dare he agree with Jay when she was starting to feel good about her form. “I know,” she retorted, the edge of exhaustion in her voice. “But every moment I spend resting gives Lucius a moment closer to finding us.”

Watching them from afar, Lady Seraphina crossed her elegant, ageless arms over her chest. She had been training Luna on the more refined aspects of her magic, providing eldership and wisdom where the others couldn’t. She watched as Luna stubbornly refocused her attention on a training dummy, summoning another surge of magical energy with a determined growl.

With a sigh, Lady Seraphina moved through the forest floor, the hem of her immortal robe gently kissing the fallen leaves. Her delicate touch on Luna’s arm made the girl stop mid-swing.

“Luna,” she said gently but firmly. “The goddess did not grant us immortality. Even she understands the importance of rest.”

“But Lucius…” Luna began to protest.

“Is mortal too, as much as he does not want to admit it,” she interjected, silencing Luna with a knowing look. Moonlight filtered through the trees overhead, glancing off Lady Seraphina’s silvery hair and casting an ethereal glow around them both. “And he too must rest.”

Luna looked into Lady Seraphina’s wise eyes for a long moment before hanging her head in reluctant acceptance. With a weary nod, Luna lowered her sword, allowing the weight of it to pull her arm down. She leaned against the base of the Vian Tree, its rough bark pressing into her back as she tried to catch her breath.

Ravenna approached, concern etched on her face, and pressed a damp cloth into Luna’s hand. Gratefully, Luna wiped the sweat from her brow.

“Thank you,” she murmured, watching as the men of their group disappeared into the forest to hunt for their evening meal.
